Lasting influence of Muckrakers
Muckraking is a type of reporting that digs underneath the surface. It's goal is to catch the corruption going on, and to provide evidence supporting it. In addition, muckraking also sought to expose social issues. In order to do this, a journalist- muckraker - would investigate and find the truth about something (sometimes this involved going undercover).
A great example of this is Upton Sinclair. He went undercover and infiltrated the Chicago meat packing industry, There, he saw terrible working conditions and disgusting care for the meat itself. From this he wrote a published a book: The Jungle. His work helped to create the Federal Drug administration, and later both the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. Below is an example of Sinclair's book, as well as a picture of the muckraker himself.
